How Does a Joint Initiative for Green Environment Make a Difference?

At a time when the world is grappling with the environmental crisis, the call for reducing plastic consumption has been growing louder. From oceans teeming with plastic waste to landfills overflowing with non-biodegradable materials, the evidence of plastic addiction is undeniable. According to reports for the year 2017-18, the Central Pollution Control Board has estimated that India generated approximately 9.4 million tonnes per annum plastic waste, which amounted to 26,000 tonnes of waste per day. Of this, approximately 5.6 million tonnes per annum plastic waste is recycled (i.e. 15,600 tonnes of waste per day) and 3.8 million tonnes per annum plastic waste is left uncollected or littered. Yet, amidst this challenge, there is a hope, driven by collective action, community initiatives, and a growing commitment to a plastic-free future. Understanding the urgency, Naya Savera Foundation, an initiative of Chandigarh Group of College, took a significant step towards a sustainable future by organizing a cleanliness drive along the NH-7 near Nada Sahib Gurdwara on the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day.

Joined by other committed NGOs such as Irada Humara and Lion’s Club, the drive brought together over 50 volunteers, each dedicated to making a tangible difference in the fight against plastic waste. The participation of multiple NGOs underscored the importance of collective action in tackling environmental issues. The objective of the Naya Savera Foundation is to promote sustainable practices. The efforts of volunteers not only cleared a significant amount of litter but also sent a strong message about the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The volunteers emphasized the importance of reducing the use of single-use plastics and encouraged the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives. For the Naya Savera Foundation, the drive was part of a broader commitment to environmental sustainability. The foundation advocates responsible waste management and the reduction of plastic use. This event was a step forward to create a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations. The drive also provided an opportunity for the volunteers, mostly young students, to actively contribute to the cause and gain firsthand experience in community service.

As we move forward, it is crucial that everyone commits to reducing plastic waste in their daily lives. Whether it’s by participating in future cleanup drives, reducing the use of single-use plastics, or creating awareness about the issue, everyone has a role to play in developing a sustainable future. International Plastic Bag Free day is observed on July 3 every year. The objective of observing the day is to encourage people to avoid using single-use plastic to eliminate plastic pollution. Bangladesh is said to be the first country in the world to ban plastic bags completely in 2022. Acting promptly, many countries, including India, also banned single-use plastic. The success of the cleanliness drive on International Plastic Bag Free Day is a reminder that every small action counts in the fight against plastic pollution. The Naya Savera Foundation, along with its partners, has shown that with determination and collaboration, it is possible to make a significant difference.
